CHOICE THEORY explains why and to a great extent how people behave. All of our behaviour is purposeful. Our purpose is always to attempt to satisfy the basic biological and psychological needs of survival, love and belonging, power, freedom and fun. The theory is called choice theory because all behaviour is our best attempt, at the moment, to control ourselves and by so doing control the world around us. We continually try to satisfy one or more of these basic needs.
The only behaviour a person has any control over is his or her own. One person cannot 'make' another person do anything that person chooses not to do.
CHOICE THEORY provides the reason why authoritarian management does not, and will not, result in long term behaviour change. Choice Theory is the opposite of Stimulus-Response Theory. Choice Theory states that all behaviour is internally motivated and chosen. From a stimulus-response perspective behaviour is caused by someone or something outside the individual.
REALITY THERAPY
is a method of interviewing based on Choice Theory to help individuals gain more effective control over their lives. Reality Therapy is the process of developing effective counselling and management skills. This approach has proven valuable in education, parenting, leadership and management; it lends itself to any situation where people need to learn how to satisfy their needs in responsible ways.
REALITY THERAPY is based on the belief that we all choose what we do with our lives and that we are responsible for the choices. Responsibility is defined as learning to choose behaviours that satisfy our needs and at the same time, not to deprive others of a chance to do the same.
LEAD MANAGEMENT focuses on management change utilising many of the principles outlined by W Edwards Deming. Central to the development of a quality organisation is the concept that participants are involved as a learning community striving for more effective outcomes.
INTERVIEWING FOR SUCCESS
The Elegance of the Interview
The art of interviewing incorporates techniques that enable the interviewer to develop skills to work effectively and efficiently in a variety of situations with varying types of clients. This workshop builds skills in communicating for success with resistant clients/staff members. Participants will enhance their ability to move the client/staff members from negative involvement with personal externally controlled difficulties towards internal understanding of their behaviour. This change of focus in the interview will lead to responsible behaviour as a basis for ongoing success for the client/staff members. During this course participants will be practising interviewing skills in a variety of scenarios with direct coaching and feedback by the trainer.
EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE
Emotional intelligence is a different way of being smart. It is a sense of self-awareness. It includes social skills and empathy skills, identifying feelings, being confident, understanding and managing moods, motivation and delaying gratification. Researchers now generally agree that IQ counts for less than 20% in achieving success. The ability to manage one's emotions, having empathy for the feelings of others and the regulation of emotion in a way that enhances living are far more important than traditional measures of verbal and mathematical intelligences. This course introduces participants to the ideas and concepts of emotional intelligence.
HOW TO BE A BETTER MANAGER
Being an effective manager is one of the hardest jobs in the world. There is no instruction manual that provides answers to all the problems that managers face daily. Without a clear understanding of how and why people behave, managers can develop levels of frustration that may lead them to feel powerless.
The focus of this program is on managers learning about practical strategies for positive managing. Topics to be covered in this course include, the understanding of how and why people behave; linking of behaviour to the understanding and identification of the five basic genetic needs; specific strategies to build behaviours to achieve a sense of balance in different work situations and discussions of different managing styles.
The workshop aims to further develop participant's skills in positive managing techniques and highlights the importance of modelling respectful and co-operative behaviours of staff. The one/two day program allows time to practise some of the skills introduced in the workshop and provides opportunities for participants to discuss their ideas with other managers.
Practise some of the skills introduced in the workshop and provides opportunities for participants to discuss their ideas with other managers.
